Abstract

This essay attempts to engage the category of the modern working-class and attempts to examine the theoretical/historical bases for its exclusive identification with the wage-labor form. As such, this essay traces the evolution of the category of labor as first conceptualized by 19th-century political economy (Smith, Ricardo, Marx). It then attempts to reconcile non-wage-labor forms (slave-labor) with a concept of the working-class in an effort to re-conceptualize the working-class as a category of social analysis better able to capture the complexities of marginalized labor forms.
