Leadership in Nursing Professional Development
The new Nursing Professional Development: Scope and Standards of Practice has changed the future focus and role of the nursing professional development (NPD) leader and the NPD practice specialty. With today’s dynamic and complex healthcare environment, NPD leaders must continuously scan internal and external environments and futuristically align the activities of the NPD department to the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic plan. The NPD leader’s sponsorship of innovation, change, and value-added activities are required to: 1) proactively address the current and future needs of the organization; 2) demonstrate relevance of the NPD department’s activities to the goals and outcomes of the organization; and 3) establish the NPD leader’s role in collaboration and partnerships for the organization’s success. Unfortunately a gap has existed in the professional development and literature targeted specifically for NPD leaders, this gap led to the development of the textbook, Leadership in Nursing Professional Development: An Organizational and System Focus (Smith & Harper, 2016) commissioned by the Association for Nursing Professional Development. The overall purpose of this session is to provide an overview of the areas of leadership development needed for NPD leaders and the role NPD leaders play in the strategic success of healthcare organizations and systems.
