Abstract

Chapter 2:

Leadership is a social transaction in which a leader influences and inspires others to work together to achieve a common mission and established goals (Roussel & Ratcliffe, 2013). Health care in a complex, dynamic environment requires strong leadership skills to influence current and future practice. In this environment, all nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners function as leaders within the organization as they promote learning, change, and professional role competence and growth (Harper & Maloney, 2016). The leader of the NPD department is involved in managing and leading organizational education and development initiatives to achieve patient, staff, and organizational outcomes. Ultimately, the NPD department leader manages a department of leaders to achieve these goals. This chapter focuses on NPD leader qualifications, accountability, transformational leadership, and the competencies needed to achieve desired outcomes in today's complex health care environment.
