Abstract
The anatomy and pathophysiology of Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA) are described in this session. Systemic blood flow in an unrepaired heart and with expected assessment findings are illustrated. A description of the surgical repair is provided for both uncomplicated and complex patients. Post-operative systemic blood flow is illustrated based on the arterial switch operation. Patient A underwent a complete repair with a successful switch of the pulmonary artery and aorta. Patient B had an extensive and complicated post-operative course following TGA repair. An examination of two separate patient case studies of infants with TGA follows. All relevant labs, diagnostic imaging, vital signs and assessments are discussed in detail. The priority aims of nursing care are highlighted for each case.
